Desktop Computer Battery Backups

"Should I have one?" Perhaps not.

A battery backup, also known as a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) mainly protects your desktop from power problems, can prevent data loss, and gives you time for a clean shutdown in the event of a power outage.

Let's look at where a UPS can help, and where a UPS offers no more protection than a good surge protector.

Brownout Protection

Power flow: Voltage drops by 10% to 25%, but electricity stays on

What you see: Lights dim or flicker, and fans spin slower

Duration: Usually a few seconds

UPS for the win! Your computer will be protected and should stay running and healthy.

Blackout Protection

Power flow: Total shutdown of electricity

What you see: Lights go dark, and appliances stop working entirely

Duration: Seconds, minutes, hours, or days

A UPS is beneficial ONLY IF at least one of the following apply:

• A UPS will only keep your computer running for a few minutes. If the blackout is brief, a UPS is beneficial.


• If you happen to be at or near your computer when the power goes out, you should have time to quickly save any work and gracefully shut down your computer before the UPS battery is depleted.


• Your computer is attached to your UPS with a USB cable, and you have software installed that communicates to the UPS. The UPS will instruct your computer to automatically shut down after a minute or two after the power fails. ☍

Otherwise, a UPS provides no benefit over a good quality surge protector. Once the power goes out and the UPS battery is drained, your computer will abruptly shut off.

What About Laptops?

As laptops have their own internal battery, a UPS will provide no benefit over a good quality surge protector. However, if your laptop battery is old and no longer holds a charge, then a UPS can be beneficial.

UPS Disadvantages

Failure. While a UPS is designed to protect your computer, they fail surprisingly often. Your computer won't be harmed, but you'll have no power to your computer.

Lifecycle. Most UPS batteries are lead acid. As with your car, these must be replaced every five years or so. A UPS will often continuously beep when it detects that the battery needs to be replaced. While you can often silence this alarm, it can be quite annoying.

Cost. A desktop UPS typically ranges from around $60 to $250 depending on capacity and load. Replacement batteries range from around $50 to $100.

Bottom Line

If you live in an area with frequent brownouts or blackouts, and you have installed "smart" UPS software that gracefully shuts down your computer in the event of a blackout, then having a UPS does provide a layer of protection to your computer.

Otherwise, purchase a quality surge protector instead.
